What is a bunded tank?

A bunded tank, or 'double-skinned' as they are sometimes named, is widely considered one of the safest methods of fuel storage. This is because they are essentially a 'tank within a tank'.

The inner layer houses the fuel or substance, which is then protected by a further outer layer. The space between the two layers is normally referred to as the 'bund'. The primary purpose of a bunded tank is to minimise the risk of leaks, spills and overflows, as well as prevent environmental contamination, protecting your fuel. For more information on bunded tanks, visit our blog.

Are fuel tanks compatible with HVO?

Yes, most of our supplied fuel tanks are fully HVO compatible. As HVO is chemically very similar to conventional diesel fuel, therefore HVO is usually compatible with the common materials found in fuel storage tanks.

However, it is always best to ensure your tank can safely store HVO fuels. Our team of advisors can answer any questions you may have regarding HVO storage, and help you discover the right tank for you. If you'd like to know more about HVO, visit our HVO page.

What does OFTEC mean?

With the increasing complexity of regulations involved in oil-fired equipment servicing, it's important your services are carried out by a trained, OFTEC engineer. OFTEC is the Oil Firing Technical Association - which is an independent body governing the certification of oil-fired equipment engineers and technicians.

To be an OFTEC-certified engineer, one must pass specific examinations focusing on the quality of installations and services.

What regulations are in place for fuel tank installation?

Currently, there are some governing rules on the location of your fuel tanks to ensure your safety, as well as your property. These are as follows:
- 1.8m away from non-fire-rated eaves of a building
- 1.8m away from a non-fire-rated structure/building
- 1.8m away from openings in a fire-rated structure/building.
- 1.8m away from liquid fuel appliance fuel terminals
- 760mm away from a non-fire-rated boundary, such as a wooden fence
- 600mm away from screening (e.g. foliage) that does not form part of the boundary.
