The leadership and business achievements of one of East Yorkshire’s best-known chief executives have been recognised at a top award ceremony.
Tim Rix CBE, who heads up 150-year old J.R. Rix & Sons Ltd, was christened Family Business Director for Yorkshire and North East 2019 at the IoD awards ceremony on July 4.
Mr Rix is the fifth-generation family member to run the company which has a diverse portfolio including shipping and stevedoring, logistic and warehousing, domestic and commercial fuel sales, garage forecourts, fuel cards, manufacturing, car retail and property development.
With a strategic approach to investing he has significantly transformed the business he took over into a modern, responsive, risk taking and entrepreneurial organisation which continues to seek improvements and new opportunities.
Mr Rix said he was delighted to have been recognised but praised the group’s senior management team for the huge role they played in the growth and transformation of the company.
He said: “Running a family business comes with its own set of unique responsibilities and challenges, so having a strong team around me is essential.
“It has always been my intention to continue taking the business forward, to grow it and to build on the achievements of the previous directors, to ensure that when it comes time for me to pass the company on, it’s in the best possible shape for the next generation.
“Having great people around me makes this possible, so whereas I have been given this award, I’m accepting it on behalf of us all.”
The award comes off the back of Mr Rix receiving the CBE for services to the economy and regeneration in the Humber Region in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List.
As well as running J.R. Rix & Sons, he sits on the boards of a number of organisations dedicated to rejuvenating the local economy including the Local Enterprise Partnership, the North Bank Partnership, the City of Hull Leadership Board and the Regional Growth Fund.
Mr Rix is also a member of the Humber-wide Energy Board promoting the ‘energy estuary’ and a founder member of the ‘For Entrepreneurs Only’ group, a network aimed at supporting business start-ups.
