Heating oil supplier making delivery
April 04, 2018

When choosing a heating oil supplier, there are several things that you may need to consider before making your decision. It’s important to consider other factors rather than just price. You might want to find a supplier local to you to help benefit from quicker delivery times and also reduce emissions produced by the delivery. Also, consider customer reviews, do research on websites and social media pages, suppliers that use independent customer review platforms such as Feefo ensure all reviews are genuine. Rix Petroleum has 13 depots across the UK, so you’ll be able to find your local supplier easily. We’ve put together an essential guide below of other factors you need to know about heating oil and heating oil suppliers, so you can be confident in your future purchases.

What is Heating Oil?

Heating oil is primarily used to heat homes, mostly those in more rural areas that are not connected to the national gas network. The oil is stored in a tank that is placed somewhere on your property and is topped up when the oil levels are running low. The oil is delivered via a specialist fuel tanker and pumped into your tank through a meter which is operated by a qualified driver and operative.

Why Choose Heating Oil?

1.5 million homes currently use heating oil, and there are good reasons for this. Typically, oil is seen as a more expensive alternative fuel; however, as of 2014 heating oil prices have dramatically fallen, making it one the cheapest ways to heat your home. A recent study found heating oil to be the cheapest means of heating a home available in the UK in 2017. The report, undertaken by Sutherland, found that on average heating oil would cost around £894 a year, saving around £73 compared to using gas.

Ordering Heating Oil

When ordering from your heating oil supplier, there are certain times of the year that oil is traditionally cheaper due to being in lower demand. Rix recommends purchasing in the summer period where the demand is much lower, leading to the oil being cheaper compared to the peak winter months. It is important to check your tank regularly to ensure it is topped up with oil, allowing you to make purchases in the summer months and keep the price down instead of having no choice but to buy in the more expensive months. Always keep an eye on your tank levels to avoid the need for an emergency delivery which will be more expensive than a planned delivery!

Maintaining Your Tank

Your tank will usually last between 15 and 20 years, some coming with a 10-year guarantee. To maintain your heating oil tank, it should be inspected at least once a year by an OFTEC qualified engineer who will check for any potential issues. You don’t want your tank to suddenly break in the middle of winter and leave you with no heat! In between these checks, it is worth keeping an eye on it yourself and reporting it if you notice anything changes. For example, check for bulging, cracks, or any rust on your tank that could show signs of it becoming weak. You should also check all connections are secure to avoid any loss of oil, which could make a mess of your garden and your finances!

When tanks are situated outside, the paraffin in the oil can freeze and clog your line, preventing the heating system from working. Insulating your tank and pipes can help reduce the risk of this happening, or purchase additives that lower the temperature of your heating oil. If you have any concerns about your oil tank, you can contact Rix Heating Services and they will be able to assist you.

Choosing the Best Heating Oil Supplier

When it comes to choosing a heating oil supplier, there is more to take into consideration than simply price, as we mentioned in the introduction above. Prices are constantly changing, so just because one supplier is the cheapest one month, it doesn’t mean they will be the next.

These changing prices mean it is important to go with a supplier who provides excellent service as well. Rix is a family-run company, which means we provide a more personal service than some of our larger competitors, putting our customer’s needs first, always. Choosing Rix as your heating oil supplier will guarantee a reliable, hassle-free, delivery service.

From 2015-2018 we have been awarded the Gold Trusted Service accreditation from Feefo, an online independent customer review platform. Have a look for yourself, read our customer reviews here.

We hope this guide to choosing a local heating oil supplier will help you when you come to ordering your next delivery of fuel.
