January 15, 2014

So, how’s the New Year panning out ... resolutions all forgotten? Holiday seem like an age ago after a couple of weeks back at work? Yep, thought so, it’s just the same for us. And no, none of us here are two stone lighter as we all intended to be by now, it just seems not to have happened. Heaven knows why!

Never mind, no need to be depressed because there’s so much to look forward to in 2014, and so much has already happened. For instance, while we were ushering in January 1st Latvia was busy joining the Eurozone. Imagine that. Somewhere between that glass of bubbly celebrating the stroke of midnight and the dregs of the final bottle of red, an entire nation was transformed. It is the 18th state to join and by all accounts everyone was very pleased indeed.

And if it’s sport you like, well you’re in for a treat. In February we’ve got the winter Olympics to look forward to, in Russia, and in August the Summer Youth Olympics in China. They’ll be a fight for the TV remote in our house when they hit the screen. The World Cup in Brazil too … I wonder if that’ll show any matches on the box.

The more politically astute among you will know 2014 could mark the year the United Kingdom falls apart. The Scottish referendum is due to take place in September and could see our brethren from the north fall away. Rix has traded for more than 100 years north of the border and we love the country.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, not if you like space anyway. And who doesn’t? NASA’s New Horizons will cross the orbit of Neptune this year, en route to Pluto which it will reach in 2015, and in September it is due to carry out the first tests of its unmanned aircraft, Orion. Clever boffins those NASA folks, rather like our chaps at Rix Petroleum only with fewer buttons to press as mission control.

Yes, 2014 looks as if it is going to be another year, that’s for sure. Whether it’ll be a good one or a bad one, well who knows? And there’s not much we can do about it anyway so let’s just get through it best we can together, sharing the laughter and the tears, the joy and the sadness.

It’s perhaps a bit late to wish you all a Happy New Year now, but from everyone at Rix, we hope 2014 turns out to be everything you’d want it to be and more. Have a good one!
