Hadleigh Castle - Essex

Spending a warm summer’s day exploring the 13th century ruins of Hadleigh Castle can be a great way to enjoy a tranquil day out, offering idyllic views of the Thames Estuary and surrounding areas.

One of the unique things about Hadleigh Castle is that its ruin was partially due to subsidence, as it is built on the London Clay Formation – a unique geological area that we now know is not ideal for such large buildings, and is in fact the reason you don’t see as many giant skyscrapers in London as other major cities.

The nearby Hadleigh Country Park was originally part of the castle grounds, and is a great place to park and walk up to the castle ruins, as well as explore the rest of the area and enjoy the lovely scenic views and wildlife, and you could also pay a visit to the replica Iron Age Roundhouse. There are lots of different events held here too such as stargazing walks or children’s activity days. The castle is open most days, entry is free and dogs on leads are allowed.
