Hints & Tips From Rix

The Rix Robin cares about you and your family and wants to help keep you safe from carbon monoxide. But what is carbon monoxide and how can you protect you and your loved ones from it? This article gives you some useful information and advice surrounding the subject.

What is carbon monoxide?

When fuels such as gas, oil, coal and wood do not burn properly, a poisonous gas called carbon monoxide (CO) is produced which can be extremely dangerous to humans. Exposure to CO can make you unwell and in extreme cases can cause death.

Some of the most common causes of carbon monoxide come from incorrectly installed, poorly maintained or improperly ventilated household appliances – such as cookers, heaters and central heating boilers – so it is extremely important for households to be protected from this dangerous gas through the installation of a carbon monoxide detector.

How do I protect my home from carbon monoxide?

The gas, which has no taste or smell, is also colourless, making it very tricky to identify. Only with a carbon monoxide detector can you detect where you have a carbon monoxide problem. You can protect your family from Carbon monoxide in a number of ways.

Position your carbon monoxide detector correctly

Ideally, you should have a carbon monoxide detector placed throughout your home. But as a bare minimum, we recommend installing a detector in the same room where your boiler is located and near your family's bedrooms. A CO alarm should either be fitted onto the ceiling at least 300mm from any wall, or on a wall as high up as possible (above any doors and windows) but not within 150mm of the ceiling. Furthermore, the alarm should be between 1m-3m horizontally from the appliance.
