Example of our commitment to our employees - Hearty Lives

The British Heart Foundation is investing £1.5m in helping to improve the health of Hull’s population and Rix has become the first company in the city to take advantage of the funding. As part of the programme, dieticians and other health professionals supported our employees throughout a 12 week programme with advice on healthy eating, giving up smoking, reducing alcohol intake and mental health issues. To help employees increase their activities levels, the company also created a five-a-side football tournament which will take place on a weekly basis at the Goals Soccer Centre on Clough Road and is running Zumba classes for our Hull business staff.

Hearty Lives Hull has been working closely with Rix to offer employees free health advice and support. Hearty Lives Hull is an innovative partnership between the BHF, NHS Hull and Hull City Council, aiming to improve the heart health of Hull residents.

Free workplace health initiatives are being delivered to Hull companies by private health firm ABL Health. Employees have been offered a number of health incentives, from health checks, to weight loss, to stress management, to exercise, to alcohol awareness and much more.  This enables staff to keep a close eye on their own personal health, and to get advice from health professionals about any health niggles which may be bothering them. Long term health benefits include, weight loss, lower blood pressure, reducing alcohol consumption, stopping smoking. Not only does the individual taking part in the programme benefit, but so do their families, their employer and the NHS.

The Rix Petroleum drivers have benefited from weight loss advice, diet plans and exercise plans to help them reduce their risk of heart disease, with some drivers seeing staggering losses of over 1 stone in 12 weeks. Office based staff have seen weight losses too, but have also benefited from stress reduction techniques, office based exercises and free Zumba lessons.

The Hearty Lives Hull initiative aims to help businesses reduce sickness absence, increase work based productivity and to help improve employee morale. Working with J R Rix and Sons has been an absolute pleasure for our Hull based team and has offered us an insight into where the programme can best thrive. We aim to continue this programme by training up ‘health champions’ who will act as Health Advocates, offering support, advice and signposting to local health services to ensure health promotion within Rix is sustainable.

J R Rix and Sons has its employees wellbeing at the centre of its attention, and Hearty Lives Hull has thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of supplying health advice to its employees and management.
