How Boilers Can Break Down Due To Poor Maintenance

Rix Heating Services recommends that boilers should be regularly serviced by OFTEC registered engineers, just like our own, in accordance with the prescribed manufacturer’s maintenance schedule - usually every 12 months. Oil fired installations require regular maintenance that includes a number of safety checks concerning emissions, the standard of oil filters/strainers and the inspection of fuel tanks and fuel line installations.

An OFTEC registered engineer should be able to observe the improved performance of a heating system with the presence of the K+ additive, but it is imperative that regular servicing and maintenance is still undertaken in conjunction with the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Rix Petroleum does not recommend that boiler servicing is conducted by anyone that is not OFTEC registered as all OFTEC-approved engineers work to recognised high standards and practices.

We work in partnership with Boilerplus to offer oil boiler breakdwon insurance. To find out more about Oil boiler insurance from Boilerplus please click here.

Signs your boiler may need servicing

We have put together a list of things to look out for but we would always advise to get an annual winter service on or around the 1st September ready for the winter weather.

  • Black smoke or a build-up of soot – this prevents the boiler from burning oil efficiently
  • A yellow or brown staining around or on the boiler
  • Oil burner lock-out
  • Increased fuel usage
