Are you new to heating oil? Well, you've come to the right place! With more than 80 years’ experience in the heating oil industry, Rix Petroleum can offer expert knowledge and advice about heating oil and your oil heating system. Below are some very common questions we receive about heating oil for your home. If you don't find what you're looking for simply contact your local depot via the contact us page on our website.
Which heating oil do I need?
Some domestic boilers use gas oil. However, the vast majority of oil-fired boilers and cookers are fuelled by kerosene, which is also known as home heating oil, boiler juice, heating oil and 28 second burning oil. If you are unsure which type of oil your heating system or range uses, your local Rix depot will be happy to help.

Do I need to know anything before ordering?
It would be helpful if you know the capacity of your heating oil tank, you can work this out by taking the measurements of a metal tank or by locating the model number on a plastic tank. Otherwise, simply contact us and one of our helpful depot staff will be happy to work out the details for you.
Also, you should make sure that an OFTEC qualified engineer has recently serviced your oil boiler and tank. If any maintenance is required, we can arrange for one of our engineers to visit before ordering your oil. For more information about our Heating Services department, click here.
Does the time of year I order my fuel influence the price I pay?
Yes, the time of year can influence the price of heating oil. Typically, heating oil prices are at their lowest during the summer months when demand is usually at its lowest. Cold weather in the middle of the winter can have a huge impact on demand and therefore prices are likely to rise. December is also usually an expensive month to buy heating oil as people try to stock up on oil in time for Christmas.
Other factors such as natural disasters, war or political unrest can have large effect on the price you pay for your heating oil.
So, where possible, order when demand is lower. If you don't have room in your tank during the summer months, try to order before the cold weather and high demand really kicks in.
Does the quantity of heating oil I order influence the price I pay?
Larger quantities of heating oil are generally cheaper to purchase per litre. Ordering 500 litres at a time puts the cost up for you and for us. Ordering larger quantities at a time will help to lower the price per litre you pay as our costs are in turn reduced. If you are on our flexible monthly payment scheme you can spread the cost of the fuel you will use over the year, click here for more information.
How can/do I pay you for my heating oil delivery?

- If ordering over the phone or Internet you can pay by debit (no fee) or credit card (1.5% surcharge applies to credit cards).
- If you are a homeowner you can apply to open a monthly payment scheme and pay by direct debit. Alternatively, once you have been set up with a MyRix account you can pay online or over the phone by Switch, Visa or Mastercard.
