Back in 1873 Robert Rix, a sea captain and merchant adventurer began trading out of the Port of Hull. Fast forward to 2017 and the Rix family still call Hull home with many of their businesses spread out over the city, Rix Petroleum head office, Rix shipping, Rix Sea Shuttle, Rix Heating Services, Maritime Bunkering, FuelmateJordans Cars and Victory Leisure Homes close by. For a family-owned company with a history as long as Rix’s, being associated to Hull for such a long time is a fantastic achievement.

And we’re not the only ones who think the future of Hull is bright. Hull has been named the UK City of Culture 2017, beating Dundee, Leicester and Swansea Bay to the title. Once the announcement that Hull had won was made, we jumped at the chance to be involved and support this amazing opportunity. Speaking about being official Business Club partners of Hull 2017, Tim Rix, managing director of JR Rix & Sons, described it as a platform for Hull to showcase itself on the global stage. Hull 2017 started the year with a huge firework and projection show, the city is due to host the Turner Prize, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, world-renowned theatre events and recently announced the Radio 1 Big Weekend.

Following all the redevelopments in the city, we were very proud to welcome the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall who visited several newly refurbished museums and charities.

Another pioneer for Hull is Prime Minister Theresa May, who has voiced how impressed she is by the start of Hull’s UK City of Culture year and highlighted the huge opportunity it is for Hull.

“This special accolade can act as a catalyst by attracting visitors, bringing communities together and enabling Hull to strike important new partnerships, both within the UK and internationally.”

With the local economy projected to get an added £60m in the next 12 months through the City of Culture – this is the perfect time to invest in Hull’s future. The government is contributing £15m including investments in local projects, the Hull New Theatre, and the Ferens Gallery refurbishment.
