The nights are drawing in, the temperature is on the wane. We might see the odd day of brilliant sunshine yet before the clocks change and plunge us half into darkness, but they are slipping away alongside the memories of summer. Winter is on its way, and many are predicting a bad one.
It is at this time of year we know that the thoughts of our customers turn to stocking up on heating oil. And rightly so. You don’t want to be caught out and left high and dry, especially with the forecast of snow on the way.
Thankfully, there is a way of ensuring this doesn’t happen. A way of making sure you and your family are not left out in the cold this winter. And that is to buy early!
Ordering your heating oil in October or early November brings two significant benefits; fuel tends to be cheaper and delivery times are much shorter compared to later in the year on the run up to Christmas.
Home Heating Oil Prices
The price of heating oil is dependent on the price of crude oil and like all other commodities, this is based on supply and demand. The greater the demand, the higher the price.
Naturally, everybody wants to be stocked up for Christmas – after all, no one wants to spend the holidays worrying that the heating is going to go off – so as the winter wears on, demand for heating oil goes up. With it, therefore, goes the price.
That means choosing to top up in October or early November, even if you’re not quite ready to do so, you could save a significant amount of money. And on the run-up to Christmas, with presents, food and all the other trappings of the holiday season to fork out for, saving money is a big plus!
The other great benefit of ordering your heating oil early is that the delivery time will be shorter than if you leave it to later in the year. This again is linked with demand. As demand goes up when we move towards Christmas we get much busier, so the time it takes for us to deliver your fuel also increases.
But there is another factor at play here, and that, of course, is the unpredictable British weather. Snow, ice, storms, wind, and rain can all affect our tanker drivers’ ability to deliver your fuel, and in the worst cases add several days to the waiting time. This is when ordering early really has its benefits because you know that no matter what the winter throws at you, you’ll be warm and cosy at home.
How much oil to buy
It’s not just ordering early that customers need to consider, the amount of fuel ordered also plays a big role in getting the most bang for your buck. Although minimum orders at Rix start from just 500 litres, we do recommend that customers buy more if they can afford it as orders over 900 litres benefit from a lower price per litre.
So, although it might feel like you’re spending more money, you’re actually buying your fuel at a lower price, saving you money in the long run.
In addition, buying in bulk can help to reduce the number of tankers on the road so it means less disruption to your village’s roads.
If you miss the window to buy early, however, don’t panic. We don’t shut down over the Christmas holidays except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so we are on hand to fulfill your orders.
And in the run-up to the festive period, we stockpile 25-litre barrels at our depots that you can collect in case of an emergency.
In the end, whatever your situation, we’re here to help. And whether you take our advice and order early, or you leave it that little bit later in the year, as your friendly, local fuel supplier, we will always do our best to get your heating oil to you in the shortest possible time.
