If you’re looking for a second-hand tractor, you need look no further than a field in Cambridgeshire. We have recently read on the BBC website that farmers and dealers have been flocking to the tractor and machinery auction run by Cheffins, with visitors coming from as far as Africa and Sri Lanka. The auction is set on land the size of over 40 football pitches and has 35,000 registered bidders from over 100 countries.
A favourite second-hand tractor that is available at the auction is the Massey Ferguson 135, or its sister the 165, which was originally produced in the mid - 1960’s. Although basic, they are incredibly reliable and with a bit of love and care, these tractors could still be running until they are 100 years old.
You might wonder how the customers who purchase these timeworn tractors manage to get them back to countries like Somalia or Kenya? They painstakingly remove the cabs, wheels, engines, axles, windows, doors and pack them in containers to be shipped by sea transporters.
We think it’s great that these tractors are given another chance to help transform communities all over the world.
