It's been nearly 4 weeks since Rix launched the "We Care" community competition and so far we've received some fantastic entries from local communities throughout the UK.

What has been great to see is the diversity of the entries, we've had Girl Guides, Schools, Cricket clubs, Charities and performing arts clubs to name a few.

If you would like to enter the competition or know someone or an organisation that would benefit, all you have to do is go to www.rix.co.uk/we-care then upload a picture that encapsulates your caring cause, charity, location or organisation along with a short description of why you think it should win. Then simply share it with as many people, friends, family, co - workers as possible.

The closing date isn't until the 22nd July so you still have plenty of time to enter, but remember the sooner you do enter the longer you have to get people to vote for you!

	Good luck.

Here at Rix Petroleum we have the honour of serving some of the happiest people in all of Scotland.

That’s because our Aberdeen depot, based in the on the bank of the river Dee, delivers residential heating oil to rural homeowners across a region which was recently voted the best place in the country to live.

According to the Bank of Scotland Rural Areas Quality of Life Survey, residents in Aberdeenshire benefit from higher incomes, low crime rates and good quality education. On the whole they are fitter and healthier than people living in other areas of the country and enjoy more hours of sunshine each day.

Life expectancy in the county is 78.2 years, the highest in Scotland.

Although we couldn’t possibly claim any credit for any of these statistics, we’d like to think we do our bit to bring a smile to the people of Aberdeenshire.

After all, without us being on hand to ensure people’s homes are kept warm and dry, no matter how remote or exposed they may be, through wind, rain, frost, ice and snow, then life in Aberdeenshire would be a different prospect altogether.

It is a sad day when even a Church isn't safe from a thief.

The Times newspaper recently published a story where a Church in Northumbria had 800 litres of heating oil stolen, worth around £600.

As the cold weather continues to stay people are becoming desperate and therefore heating oil theft has seen a dramatic rise recently.

Our advice is simple, ensure your tank is well protected; use a pad lock and security lighting as an additional deterrent. It is also worth positioning your heating oil tank where it isn't visible from the road or from Google Earth / Maps. A known tactic of heating oil thieves is to use Google Earth / Maps to look for the tank in people's gardens, by placing your tank under a tree or gazebo may help to hide it from such views.

Thousands of homes still remain without power, roads impassable and much of the UK in the clutches of winter’s tight grasp. With temperatures forecast staying below minus one for the rest of the week, the adverse weather has marked a sharp contrast to temperatures of previous Easters. To make this period of British ‘Spring’ time much more depressing, only last year Easter was filled with life, happiness and sunshine as part of the nation enjoyed tropical temperatures of around 20°Celsius.

But fear not! Your comrades at Rix Petroleum have taken matters into their own hands in an attempt to beat back this frosty stranglehold. For charity, or mainly for chocolate, the employees have entered into a raffle at the expense of a pound per slot in the hopes of one of them being the lucky winner of a giant Easter egg. Forget charity Harlem shakes or shaving your hair off, true charity lies here as all proceeds go toward our charity of the year, Dove House Hospice.

The magic of Easter and the blooms of Spring may yet to arrive but what is certain is that a little bit of cold weather will not be stopping Rix Petroleum from meeting your Heating Oil needs and requirements.

Rix Petroleum is proud to be supporting Bridlington Young Farmers Club to help the organisation attract more members, who will hopefully become the next generation of British farmers.

As part of the partnership we will be providing advice and support about online marketing, social media and events management to the club.

Rix Petroleum has also supplied members with brandedrugbytops, created literature for its recent 60thyear anniversary dinner and has invited the club to join it on its stand at next year’s Driffield Show.

James Brook, marketing manager for Rix, said the company was keen to work with the youngsters to help them develop up to date business skills and continue its support of British agriculture.

He said: “We have supported East Yorkshire’s farmers for more than 80 years and this is a continuation of that.

“Bridlington Young Farmers and their like are the future of farming in the UK and it makes sense for us to work with them to help give them the best possible start in the industry.

“We are a large business and carrying out a lot of marketing activities, which is a part of business farming has perhaps lacked in the past, so if we can offer our expertise to help them get ahead, we are very happy to do that.”

Sammy Wade,Chairmanof Bridlington Young Farmers, said the partnership would help the club get more members by raising its profile in and around the Bridlington area.

She said: “We were approached by Rix Petroleum because they wanted to get involved with the young farmers and that coincided with us wanting to increase our membership.

“They came up with some great ideas to help us promote ourselves and develop new skills so really it is a win-win.

“They were really helpful with our 60thanniversary dinner and we’re looking forward to continuing working with them on an ongoing basis.”

Bridlington Young Farmers currently has around 20 members and is on the lookout for anyone interested in joining.

Fuelmate, part of the JR Rix & Sons group of companies have increased their network coverage to more than 7,000 forecourts after signing a deal to supply Esso’s fuel card.

It follows a deal in December with DKV Euro Services which saw them being able to provide a card which is accepted at service stations across the continent for the first time.

Fuelmate now provides cards from Esso, BP, Shell, Keyfuels, Texaco, UK Fuels and DKV Euro Services.

Johnny Vintis, manager of Fuelmate, said the addition completed the company’s offering and gave the business far greater coverage across the country.

He said: “The Esso card is fantastic for Fuelmate because we have been looking to grow our national coverage and expand the range of cards we offer; this deal allows us to do both of those things in one move.

The deal between the two companies was completed this month and the card is available from Fuelmate now.

It has added nearly 1,000 extra fuel stations to the company’s coverage meaning Fuelmate customers can buy fuel at more than 7,000 UK filling stations.

Pic: Helen Orchiso, Rix Petroleum cosy competition winner with her oil tank.

Rix Petroleum Ltd and the Gazette and Herald got together to run a competition for the newspapers readers to win 500 litres of home heating oil, worth about £500.

Slingsby resident Helen Orchison was the lucky winner, a great Christmas present for the normally competition shy school governor. This early Christmas present was delivered on the first day of the icy weather in January, a great relief to Helen and her family knowing that they would have plenty of fuel to keep them warm and cosy however long the cold weather stayed.

Mrs Orchison commented “When the tanker came to deliver the heating oil it was the first day of the really bad weather in January. Snow was falling heavily so it was great timing because we knew we’d have plenty of fuel no matter how long the ice and snow lasted.”

Mrs Orchison asked for the fuel to be delivered in the New Year when her supply would be getting low, and it arrived just in time for the big freeze.

Duncan Lambert, director and general manager of Rix Petroleum Ltd, congratulated Mrs Orchison on her win. Mr Lambert said "It was a great pleasure to deliver to Helen and I’m delighted she was the lucky and deserving winner. I hope it helps her and her family stay warm until the better weather is upon us.”

Keep checking our website, facebook page and twitter for up and coming competitions where you to could win discount off your next heating oil order.

What makes oil good for heating my home?

Are you new to home heating oil? Or are you thinking about moving to an alternative fuel source to heat your home? Below are just a few points about heating oil that you may or may not know!

•‘On demand’ heating and hot water – as much as you want whenever you want.
•Heating with oil is generally cheaper than using electricity, LPG, bottled Propane gas or solid fuel.
•Fuelling the boiler is automatic – no loading the appliance as with solid fuels.
•You can combine oil heating systems with alternative energy sources to reduce heating bills.
•It’s kinder to the environment than some fuels that have higher CO2 emissions.

Further information about heating oil can be found on our "frequently asked questions" page or our "new to heating oil page"

Rix Petroleum has a long association with the countryside, serving farmers and rural dwellers in Yorkshire and beyond for many years.

It is a connection we are very proud of and like to think of ourselves at the centre of country life, keeping rural homes heated and tractors and farm equipment moving.

But it has come to our attention that advances in tractor technology and overly complicated regulations might be putting our farming colleagues at odds with the long arm of the law.

We can’t have that, so always eager to help we have compiled a list of the areas that are most likely to land farmers in hot water, with a little help from the Farmers Weekly.

	There include:

 Mud on the road.

Farmers are responsible for mud dropped on the road from their own vehicles and the consequences of that can be as serious as a fatal accident. However, they share responsibility for accidents caused by vehicles operated by a contractor.

 Trailer lights.

Indicator lights must be fitted to all trailers made after 1990 which are used on public roads.

Failing to pull over when causing a traffic tailback.

This can cause accidents if frustrated and impatient drivers behind you try to overtake inappropriately. It can also result in prosecution for driving without reasonable consideration for other vehicles.

 Exceeding the weight limit.

The maximum gross train weight (GTW) – the total weight of the tractor, the trailer and its load – is 24,390kg. Exceeding the legal limit is all too easy and GTWs of 30t or more have been recorded by police forces.

 Exceeding the width limit.

The regulations state that the police must be notified before farm equipment more than 3m wide travels on a public road. There is no excuse for breaking the rules.

 Exceeding the speed limit.

Most tractors on the market now have a 40kph or 50kph top speed, much higher than the 32kph (20mph) speed limit for tractors on public road. Care must be taken to stay inside the speed limit.

So there you have it, six easy-to-break rules of tractor driving. We hope you don’t fall foul of any of them and end up having your collar felt by the local constabulary.

From everyone at Rix, stay safe and drive carefully.

This year saw one of the coldest LAMMA shows to date. We started setting up our show stand on Monday 14th January in a blizzard of snowfall. Tuesday set up saw freezing conditions set in and the opening day of the show didn't see the temperature get above -4c.

However in true LAMMA spirit customers and exhibitors turned up in their thousands, with around 35,000 people attending the show on the opening day!

The first day was fantastic, with the Rix stand being one of the busiest it has been in recent years. Take a look at a few of our pictures below, or go on to our Facebook page to see a rather amateurish (sorry) video of Rix at LAMMA 2013! http://www.facebook.com/rixpetroleum

With some milder weather in recent days and the rush to order heating oil before Christmas now over, the heating oil market has relaxed back as demand has weakened. This has led to heating oil prices falling over the last few days.

However, if the cold weather returns, which forecasters predict it will, the price of heating is likely to rise again in line with demand.

Take advantage of the market and order your heating oil from Rix today!

A new mum has landed a winter-warming windfall after winning a competition she didn’t even enter.

Stephanie Wood, from Seahouses, won 500 litres of heating oil in a competition run by Rix Petroleum North East and the Northumberland Gazette in October, after her sister-in-law, Leanne Pearce, 28, entered on her behalf.

The 21-year-old mother-of-two, who was pregnant at the time but has since had a baby boy, Lucas, was shocked when she was told she had won the fuel, worth around £350.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

“I was a bit confused because I didn’t know anything about the competition but when Leanne explained what she had done I was so grateful.

“It is such a lovely thing to do and a wonderful present.”

Ms Pearce, who is also from Seahouses, spotted the competition while browsing the Gazette at work. She decided to give it a go as her sister-in-law uses heating oil.

Ms Pearce said she hadn’t expected to win but thought it was worth a try as she knew Ms Wood was pregnant, so buying winter fuel wouldn’t be her top priority.

Tim Claxton, depot manager at Rix Petroleum NE, at Rashercap, Felton, said: “We organise a number of competitions like this but we’ve never had a winner who did not know they had even entered.

“I think it is a wonderful thing that Leanne did and it has really helped Stephanie out when she most needed it.

“We will be proud to deliver the heating oil to her and would like to wish them both, and little Lucas, a really fantastic Christmas.”

We've search the web and come up with some of our own ideas, to help you get prepared this winter!

Some tips if you are planning to leave your property empty over winter

Leave your heating on for at least an hour a day while you are away from home

In severe weather, or if severe weather is forecast, you should leave your heating on day and night at your usual temperature setting

Check that loft insulation is laid over, and under pipes in the loft

Make sure that you know where your stop tap is, and that it works so that you can turn off the water supply if needed

Consider asking a friend or relative to visit your home every day while you are away. This will mean that, if you do suffer a burst pipe, it will be detected as soon as possible. Make sure that they know where the stop tap is located.

If high winds are forecast, make sure objects such as garden furniture or ladders are fully secured

	Energy saving tips

Some of these energy-saving tips may seem obvious but they can make a big difference when it comes to reducing your fuel bill.

Set your heating to come on just before you get up and switch off after you've gone to bed. If it's very cold, set your heating to come on earlier and turn off later rather than turning the thermostat up.

If you can't heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room throughout the day and your bedroom just before you go to bed. Remember to close curtains and shut doors to keep heat in the rooms you use most.

	Keeping the heat in

Insulating your home not only keeps you warm and healthy but will also help to keep your costs down.

Fit draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors.

Make sure that your loft has at least 10-11 inches (270 mm) of insulation. Any home with 4 inches (100 mm) or less should have it topped up.

If you have wall cavities, make sure that they are insulated too.

Insulate your hot water cylinder and pipes.

Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside your rooms.

Make sure that your radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture

Don't get caught short in the cold snap!

Order your heating oil before the cold weather really arrives!

	BBC Weather Forecast

As December arrives, further wintry showers are expected but perhaps falling to increasingly lower levels, with accumulations over high ground possible in the north and east of the country.

As a front tries to come in to the west of the UK, there is also a risk of some more persistent rain, especially towards the southwest. As the rain meets the cold air, this could turn sleety with the possibility of some hill snow. However this does rely on the front making progress inland from the west, and currently the signal is for the frontal rain to stay offshore to the west.

	Monday 3 December—Sunday 9 December

Picking up with the unsettled theme at the start of the week, it begins with showers or longer spells of rain possible for the UK, with temperatures returning close to or a touch above average.

As the week progresses, there is a trend towards some parts of the country turning a little more settled, with temperatures falling to allow an increased risk of frost and icy patches. Any further rain or showers could then turn wintry over higher ground at times.

	Monday 10 December—Sunday 16 December

Winter's here, and on balance it does looks cold

Even at this long timescale there is greater than average uncertainty for the first full fortnight of December. However, the balance of probability does point to this period being colder than average, which would lead to an increased risk of frost and fog.

Check out the latest from the Met Office ForecastIssued at: Tuesday 27 November 2012 at 08:44

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/coldweatheralert/ There is a 60% probability of severe cold weather between 0600 on Friday and 0600 on Saturday in parts of England.

A cold northerly airflow will become established across the UK this week. Later this week as the wind becomes light which will allow sharp overnight frosts to occur, and lead to lower mean temperatures. Northern and some western areas of the UK will become the coldest, and there will be an increased likelihood of ice on surfaces, especially where surfaces remain wet from standing water or run-off. Freezing fog remains likely.

With the winter moving in and the gritters appearing on our roads, have you ever wondered just how snow forms?

It causes havoc for motorists a play ground for children and usually means higher priced heating oil for homeowners, but just how is snow made?

Well, to answer that we searched the web for the best explanation and we found this great article on the Met office website.

Snow is formed when temperatures are low and there is moisture - in the form of tiny ice crystals - in the atmosphere.

When these tiny ice crystals collide they stick together in clouds to become snowflakes. If enough ice crystals stick together, they'll become heavy enough to fall to the ground.

A COMMUNITY shop set up and run by volunteers has received a windfall payment from a local fuel company.

Gaydon Village Store, in Church Road, was presented with a cheque for £177 by Paul Doherty, director of Rix Petroleum (Midlands) Ltd, earlier this month.

The money was raised through the company’s village oil club which was set up two years ago to help members benefit from lower fuel prices made possible by ordering as a community.

It enables Rix to streamline deliveries to Gaydon and in turn the company donates a percentage of its profits back into community projects.

Sue Roberts, chair of Gaydon Village shop management committee, said the money would come in handy for maintenance work on the building and some local advertising.

She said: “The shop covers its overheads and makes a small profit, which we reinvest, so the money from Rix allows us to pay for those essential extras. For instance, the door and window could do with a lick of paint and we are always looking at ways of attracting more customers, so it helps in ways like that.

“It is a marvellous system because the oil club helps make fuel more affordable for people and the money we get back from it helps the wider community. It’s win-win for all really.”

Gaydon Village Shop was opened in 2010 by volunteers after the village had been without a store for around 25 years.

Around 20 local people are involved with running the business which is based in an old storage barn in the car park of the Malt Shovel pub.

Last year Coleshill-based Rix Petroleum (Midlands) Ltd donated £190 to Gaydon Village Shop through the oil club.

Mr Doherty said as a local firm he was delighted to be contributing to the project for a second year running.

He said: “By delivering to the members all on the same day we reduce our carbon footprint and traffic movements within the village. The members get heating oil at the lowest available price and a donation towards community projects.

“Gaydon Village Shop has established itself as an invaluable part of the village over the past two years, on which many residents rely. Last year the management committee made excellent use of the money we raised so I’m really pleased to be able to donate to them again.”

Rix Petroleum East Anglia - Welcome Mark Draysdale

Norwich resident Mark Drysdale brings more than 12 years experience in fuel supply and distribution to his new post at the West Carr Road-based business.

It comes as Rix Petroleum is looking to grow its delivery area with the addition of a new tanker to its fleet.

Currently the business delivers commercial diesel and residential heating oil as far as south Suffolk but the new tanker will be dedicated to serving farmers, hauliers and households in Essex and the South East.

It is due to come on stream in January.

Mr Drysdale said the Rix Petroleum has been successfully building its profile across Norfolk since the depot opened two years ago, and his task is to build on that.

He said: “Norfolk has a fantastic agricultural heritage, a lot of hauliers and many rural communities that rely on heating oil rather than the mains gas supply, and they constituent a huge part of our market so it really is a great place for us to do business. We have been steadily increasing our customer base here since the depot opened.

“It is particularly important we increase our delivery capacity at this time of the year because of the amount of people who rely on regular fuel deliveries – many of them to run their businesses through the winter months and many more to keep their houses warm.”

Mr Drysdale added the new tanker would allow Rix Petroleum to access new markets in the south, which would free up the existing tankers to work more in East Anglia.

He said: “Currently we deliver from north Norfolk down to south Suffolk and from the coast in the east to Ely in the west.

“The new tanker will open up markets further south into Essex and commercial customers in London. But it will also take over some of the work in the southern part of our patch, freeing up a tanker to concentrate more on East Anglia.

“All in all it is a good move for us and for the people and businesses we serve, particularly now when we are coming into the coldest part of the year.”

RIX Sea Shuttle, part of J.R. Rix & Sons Ltd, launched its first vessel on Friday, specifically commissioned to serve the offshore wind farm sector.

The Rix Panther was launched in a ceremony at Meridan Quay, Grimsby Fish Dock today (Friday, October 26th).

It is the first of five boats commissioned by Rix Sea Shuttle which will be used to transport maintenance engineers to and from offshore wind turbines in the North Sea.

Each of the aluminium vessels will be crewed and operated by Rix, can carry up to 12 technicians and are capable of reaching speeds of up to25knots.

The remainder of the boats are due to be delivered in 2013 and 2014.

The vessels and the launch of the sea shuttle business mark a £7.5m investment by the Hull company in the UK’s burgeoning renewable industry.

James Doyle, director of Rix Shipping, said it was a “fantastic moment” to see the first of the five boats finally in the water.

He said: “We have been working on sea shuttles project for a number of years now because we believe it is a growth area, so today is the cumulation of a great deal of planning and effort by a number of key individuals in the company who are all very proud to see the finished vessel.

“We are already in advanced discussions regarding the commissioning of this boat and the others that are due to be completed soon with some of the wind farms sector’s biggest players, and securing those contracts could well lead to further investment in the renewables sector.”

Currently there are around 150 vessels in use suitable for servicing offshore wind farms with up to 700 needed as the industry grows in the next few years.

As well as targeting wind farms off the East Coast of Yorkshire such as that currently being considered at Doggerbank, Rix Sea Shuttle is also seeking opportunities further afield, encompassing most of the upcoming offshore wind farms around the UK coastline.

WHALTON resident Pam is celebrating a cosy start to autumn after winning 500 litres of heating oil courtesy of Rix Petroleum North East.

Child minder Mrs Evans won the fuel at this year’s Glendale Show by guessing the number of balloons in the cab of one of the Felton-based company’s tankers.

She said she had been persuaded to enter the competition by a Rix rep while visiting the firm’s stand at the show, but hadn’t expected to win.

Two weeks later, however, she got a call to tell her that her guess, of 160 balloons, was the winning answer and that the heating oil was hers.

Mrs Evans said it had been wonderful to get the news, which would save her hundreds of pounds on her annual energy bills.

She said: “I went up to Rix’s stand to see what price they were offering as I bought my heating oil from them last year. The chap I was speaking to said why not have a go, it’s free, so I did but thought no more about it after that.

“When they rang up to tell me I’d won I was over the moon. 1,000 litres of heating oil can last me almost a year, because I’m very frugal, so to win 500 litres is wonderful. It will really help with the bills.”

Tim Claxton, manager of Rix Petroleum North East, congratulated Mrs Evans on the win.

“I’m extremely pleased the heating oil will make a real difference to Pam and her family over the winter time,” he said.

“There were a lot of entries on the day but Pam wasn’t going to bother until we persuaded her to do so. When we informed her she had won, however, she was very pleased she did.”

Too many people neglect their boiler and it is easy to understand why. Tucked away out of sight, they can become complacent and expect it to just go on running without a hitch.

But of course, nothing in life works out that way. Your boiler, just like your car, needs regular service and maintenance.

Hear at Rix we recommend an annual winter service in the months running up to the coldest weather.

Not only does this ensure your oil boiler will not let you down when you need it most – after all there’s nothing worse than getting home from a long day at work to a freezing house which won’t warm up – but it means it will run more efficiently, using less fuel, which in turn means lower heating bills.

A professional service also makes sure CO2 emissions are kept to a minimum, keeping your home safe for your loved ones.

Of course, if the worst comes to the worst and your boiler does break down, you can rely on Rix to fix it at any time of day or night.

We have a call out repair servicing operating throughout the year, using only highly trained Oftec-qualifiedengineers.

But in our view it’s best not to let it get that far – book your boiler a service now and make sure it is in fine working fettle for the months ahead.

Then you can relax in comfort safe in the knowledge you’ll be cosy regardless of what the British winter weather can throw at you.

Check your heating oil levels

This morning saw a very light frost on my car's windscreen, with the clear blue skies and a chill in the air it certainly felt like an Autumn morning.

Prices for heating oil have been quite steady over the last couple of weeks, but as the cold weather kicks in and demand for heating oil rises there is a significant chance that we will see the price per litre steadily rise.

Be smart this Autumn / Winter and order your heating oil sooner rather than later.

We know the cost of energy bills can be an issue for many homes, that's why Rix Petroleum do offer a monthly budget plan which helps you by allowing you to spread the cost of your heating oil throughout the year. The Rix monthly heating oil budget plan is open to homeowners that are sign up to our direct debit payment scheme. Find out more by clicking here.

It is no surprise that burglary and theft have increased during the recession, even though more serious and violent crime appears to have bucked the trend.

And one of the things we at Rix Petroleum have been hearing over the last couple of years is that fuel theft, from both domestic and commercial premises, is on the rise.

We decided therefore to get to the bottom of this and to find out see if such a trend really existed. We put in Freedom of Information Requests to all the police forces around where our depots operate to try to build a picture of the national scene.

Although several police forces didn’t release the figures due to the cost involved in processing them, the results are nonetheless interesting.

Our investigation shows the greatest increase in heating oil thefts from residential properties came in Norfolk, which went up by a substantial 45 per cent between 2009 and 2011, from 147 to 213 cases.

The county also saw an increase in diesel thefts from business premises which went up by 12.5 per cent over the same period.

Warwickshire and West Midlands saw the greatest increase in thefts from business premises – mainly commercial diesel – which also rose by 45 per cent from 86 cases in 2009 to 115 last year.

Hull and East Yorkshire saw a smaller increase in commercial thefts, by from 70 cases in 2009 to 81 last year.

We requested similar information from forces in Lincolnshire, West Mercia and South, West and North Yorkshire but none of these released official figures.

However, anecdotal evidence from officers appeared to support the view that fuel theft is on the increase nationally.

With this in mind it is sensible to take precautions as temperatures fall to protect your fuel supplies.

Although stopping a very determined thief is difficult most criminals are opportunists and if you make life hard for them they’re unlikely to stick around.

Therefore we recommend a few tips which may help keep your Heating Oil safe from thieves this winter, including:

Always ensure you tank is locked

Check your oil levels regularly so you know approximately how much you have

Try to disguise you oil tanks wherever possible, perhaps behind bushes or trees

Consider fitting motion sensitive, security lighting

Electric alarms are available that sound in your house or office should your oil level drop suddenly

If you are a business that stores a lot of fuel, consider fitting CCTV. Whereas it might sound expensive, but it is cheaper than losing a large quantity of fuel which your business depends on.

Millions of pounds in grants aimed at helping poorer families reduce their winter fuel bills have been left unclaimed, according to a report by the Guardian.

The money, available under the Government’s Warm Front scheme, has been set aside to help home owners install insulation and draft proofing, and improve out-of-date heating systems.

Households on certain income-related benefits can claim up to £3,500 from the scheme or up to £6,000 if they use oil central heating or an equivalent alternative technology.

But, the report states, the scheme under-spent by more than £50m last year, meaning thousands of poorer households are missing out on money that is rightfully theirs.

Duncan Lambert, a director of, Rix Petroleum, said homeowners had just a small window in which to apply for the grants as they are being phased out soon.

He said: “There is a lot of money left in the pot and if it doesn’t get spent it may just go back to the Treasury to be used in other budgets, which means few people will have seen the benefit of the scheme. But with autumn upon us, and temperatures starting to decline, now is the optimum time to apply.”

Rix Petroleum has more than 80 years’ experience supplying heating oil to rural households and can deliver in any quantity from a 500 litre small tanker to a 36,000 litre articulated truck.

Mr Lambert added: “Heating oil is a clean burning fuel and is ideal for home heating, so if homeowners can access the Warm Front scheme to help them afford new, efficient heating systems, they should be able to remain cosy this winter without breaking the bank.”

Ten lucky customers of Rix Petroleum and Rix Maritime were treated to a day out at the Lotus F1 factory in Enstone on Friday 14th September in partnership with Total. Amongst the guests were Mr & Mrs Reed who won two tickets to the day at the Driffield show 2012.

The day consisted of an exclusive factory tour, where customers got to see in person how the F1 cars are made. From design right through to the wind tunnel which tests the cars aerodynamics.

James Brook, Marketing Manager at Rix Petroleum commented. “The day was a great opportunity for us to show our appreciation to some of our customers. Everyone had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves”

The tour was finished off with a fantastic three course lunch provided by the Lotus F1 catering team.

That's right, this morning when I got up, it was dark outside, the lights needed to be on and what’s more the heating needed to be on too. It was so chilly.

When I got in the car to come to work the temperature outside registered at only 10c, no wonder the house wasn't warm like it has been.

How is this possible when at the week it was a mighty 28 degrees Celsius. Only one reason, our Great British weather!

As reluctant as I was, the heating went on for the first time since winter and looking at the weather forecast for this week, things aren’t going to get any better.

Have you put your heating on yet?

Make sure that you don’t get caught short. Check your heating oil levels today and be prepared for the Autumn and Winter ahead.

Your home is the heart of your life, it's where we spend time relaxing, resting, sleeping, cooking, gardening, decorating and above all it's probably the most expensive asset any of us will ever own.

Our homes not only absorb a lot of our money, but they also give out a lot of CO2, which isn't good for the environment. High C02 emissions also indicate that an appliance may be not very efficient to run, thus costing more money than a more energy efficient alternative.

Take a look at our Energy Saving Tips page to see where you could reduce your homes carbon footprint whilst also saving yourself some money.

New study looks at the cost of rising Rural Inflation

The cost of living for rural dwellers is rising twice as fast than for their urban counterparts, a new survey has revealed.

The study, by NFU Mutual, found that year-on-year rural inflation averaged 7.7 per cent compared with the national average of 4.3 per cent in towns and cities.

Among the causes of the hike was a 13-15 per cent increase in electrical bills, as well as increasing food prices.

The survey concluded that on average country-dwellers spend £5,992 on essential goods per year, more than £2,000 more than their fellow urbanites who averaged just £3,986.

But Duncan Lambert, director of Rix Petroleum, said there were ways in which rural households could save money, particularly on heating oil.

More efficient heating oil like our exclusive K+ fuel can really help improve the efficiency of your boiler by up to 10%.

K+ heating oil could save a household up to £100 per year off the fuel bills in a medium-sized family home.

Mr Lambert said: “This survey shows that the cost of living is a major concern for people who live in the countryside and many of those people are our customers. Heating oil is naturally one of the area's we can try to help with.

Other ways in which people can try and be more efficient is by getting their oil boiler serviced annually. This works in the same way as getting your car serviced does. A health check is performed, parts are replaced that need replacing, dirt and sludge build up are cleaned, all leading to a more energy effcient boiler.

The display lasted nearly 30 minutes and every second of it left us speechless, commented James Brook of Rix Petroleum.

	Where has the summer gone?

It doesn't seem two minutes ago when we were gearing ouselves up for the Queens Diamond Jubilee and the start of the London Olympics. Now here we are getting ready to welcome the Autumn once again.

Soon there will be the crisp morning starts with dew on the lawn and car windows, next will come the darker nights until winter fully kicks in.

As always we would encourage you to buy your heating oil before the cold weather arrives. The benfit of this is that heating oil prices are usually lower when demand isn't as high. Secondly the last thing we want is a cold snap to sneak up on you and before you know it you run out of heating oil.

We hope you've had a great summer, but we also hope you get ready for the Autumn and winter ahead.

A Rix guide to a healthier oil boiler:

We have put together a list of things to look out for but we would always advise to get an annual winter service on or around the 1st September ready for the winter weather.

Black smoke or a build-up of soot – this prevents the boiler from burning oil efficiently

A yellow or brown staining around or on the boiler

 Oil burner lock-out

 Increased fuel usage

It may not have been quite as impressive as the London Olympics, but this years Fillongley show was a huge success.

“It was also great to meet some new customers and introduce Rix Midlands to them. It’s always good to see someone’s reaction for the first time when you tell them we’re still a family owned fuel business dating back to 1873”.

Farm manager Mr Reed & his Wife took pole position at this year’s Driffield Show after winning a trip to the Lotus F1 factory in Norfolk.

The prize was offered by Rix Petroleum Ltd which exhibited a Lotus Formula One car on its stand to celebrate 65 consecutive years appearing at the show.

It includes a tour of the famous car marque’s UK factory for two, which will take place next month.

Mr Reed said he was ‘chuffed to bits’ to win the prize as he has had a lifelong interest in motor sport.

“You enter these things but you never think you are going to win,” he said.

“So it was totally unexpected when I got a call to say I had. But I was delighted, I’m looking forward to the trip because I enjoy watching motor racing on the TV and it is a once in a lifetime event.”

Mr Reed, who is a farm manager , said he hadn’t missed a Driffield Show for more years than he could remember, and his father, John Reed, used to help organise the event.

He said 2012 had been an excellent year, particularly Rix’s stall because of the Lotus car and the Q8 motorbike and sidecar on display.

Rix Power Plus is a gas oil (BS2869:A2) upgrade product formulated to allow modern diesel engines calibrated on EN590 DERV to run on red diesel. It also compensates for some of the deleterious effects of a higher FAME content e.g. tendency for water pick-up. The product will additionally enhance the performance of older vehicles.

It is added at the rate of 1 litre of additive per 3,000 litres of fuel.

The product is formulated from recognised fuel additive components and should not void an engine manufacturer’s warranty. In fact, very many engine manufacturers now recommend the use of upgrade additives when red/green diesel is used. Power Plus has a number of features including increased cetane number, increased fuel lubricity and enhanced water resistance. For a full list of Rix Power Plus benefits click here.

Although Heating Oil prices are still much lower than they were a few months ago, over the last week or so we have seen that prices for heating oil have risen slightly.

The summer months are stil la good time to buy your heating oil as prices generally rise according to demand as well as other external influences. For example in the winter months when people are using their heating oil a lot more, demand is higher, therefore product is more sought after.

Not only is the summer a good time to buy your heating oil if you have room in your tank, but it is also a good time of the year to have your oil boiler or oil fired cooker serviced.

Rix offer heating services throughout Yorkshire, East Anglia and in some parts of Scotland.

In less than a month Rix Petroleum will be commemorating the achievement by exhibiting its biggest ever stand complete with a Lotus Formula One car, a Q8 Oils motorbike and sidecar and a Rix-branded fuel tanker.

The event will also serve as a double celebration for company stalwarts Duncan Lambert and Graham Williamson, who both mark 25 consecutive years at the show each.

Mr Lambert, a director Rix Petoleum, said Driffield Show had always been a red-letter day in the Rix’s annual calendar as a date to meet up with customers old and new, particularly those from farming and rural communities.

He said: “We’ve been supplying diesel, heating oil, fuels and lubricants to East Yorkshire’s farmers and country folk for more decades than I care to remember but it can be difficult to keep in touch throughout the year as people have such busy schedules nowadays. But everyone who’s anyone comes to Driffield Show so we’ve always used it as an opportunity to show our gratitude for their continued custom and share a cup of tea and some gossip.

“Everyone at the company really looks forward to it – it can be a lot of hard work getting the stand sorted out but it’s always worth the effort.”

Mr Lambert said the company had not missed a show since 1947 and had occupied the same pitch on Driffield Show field since the event moved there.

He said that although he had been attending it for just a quarter of a century – a relative newcomer compared to some of the region’s established farming families – he had seen many changes over the years.

“The biggest difference is the size and the range exhibits,” he said.

“It has grown hugely over the time I have been coming and is now one of the biggest one day agricultural shows in the country. When I first visited back in 1987 it was nothing like the size it is today. But that is testament to the work of the Driffield Agricultural Society who do a fantastic job organising the event each year.”

This year the company will be displaying its usual range of lubricants and staff will be on hand to offer advice on different fuel types and fuel additives.

It will also be collecting for its elected charity of the year – Dove House Hospice, the Hull-based organisation that provide palliative care to people with life-limiting illnesses.

But the star of the show is likely to be the formula one car that Rix Petroleum is having shipped over from France specifically for the show.

Mr Lambert said: “Being a fuel company we wanted to bring something along that is associated with the industry, but that was at the same time exciting for the public to see. We’re hoping it will cause quite a stir.”

MP Mike Weir, will bring forward a Private Member's Bill at Westminster on Wednesday (June 20th) to suggest Pensioners should receive their winter fuel allowance earlier if they are not connected to the UK’s mains power grid and therefore rely on home heating oil or other alternative fuels.

The winter fuel allowance is usually paid in November or December and is designed to help the elderly with their heating costs.

People who live alone and were born before July 5th 1951 receive £100, while those aged 80 or over receive £300.

Mr Weir went on to say that by paying the sum earlier in the year would allow people to fill their heating oil tanks when prices tend to be cheaper, therefore getting them a better deal.

Heating Oil prices are low at the moment. Do you have room to top up your tank?

As hard as it is to believe many of us are facing up to the fact that we're having to put our heating on even though we're in June. With the cold, damp weather we have had in the last couple of weeks, please make sure you check your heating oil levels so you don't get caught short.

When the Spring came many of us thought (and hoped) that we wouldn't need our heating back on until late Autumn, but in true British style we find ourselves experiencing yet another cold start to the summer.

On the plus side, heating oil prices are at a 6 month low at present, so it is a good idea to order now if you have the room in your tank.

Order your heating oil from your local, independent fuel supplier today.

The Lerrix – named after family member Lucinda Emily Rix – is a £6m steel marine bunkering vessel which will be used to refuel larger ships along the Humber estuary and the East Coast of the UK.

The vessel is the last steel ship to be built by Rix-owned Hepworth Ship Yard in Paull, East Yorkshire, which is now the base of recently formed company Dunstons (Ship Builders) Ltd.

It is also the biggest ship the yard has ever produced, tipping the scales at a dead weight of 1254 tonnes and measuring 53 metres in length.

According to Nikki Jessop, director of Maritime Bunkering at Rix, the Lerrix will carry up to 500 tonnes of fuel oil plus 600 tonnes of gas oil, employs a crew of six and is powered by two 475kW Cummins engines.

It is so advanced it can blend fuel to the customer’s requirements on board and then heats it to facilitate efficient pumping.

Mrs Jessop said: “The Lerrix will pick up marine fuel on the Humber at Associated Petroleum Terminals in Immingham and then steam out on to the East Coast ports to wherever it is required. It can fuel several ships from one load, or in the case of a really big vessel, just service one customer and then return.

“The addition of the vessels brings our total fleet to eight ships of various different sizes.”

The naming ceremony was conducted by John Rix, chairman of J.R. Rix and Sons, along with managing director Tim Rix, and the traditional breaking of the champagne bottle was performed by the ship’s namesake, Lucinda Rix.

Addressing an audience of around 70 invited guests on William Wright Dock, Tim Rix said the ship represented a significant investment in the Humber area by the company.

He said: “We made a conscious decision to build this ship in East Yorkshire rather than abroad at an extra cost to us, because it has kept local people in work. That is very important to us – Rix is a local company and we take pride in investing in the Humber region.

“To see the ship in the water is a proud day for everyone. J.R. Rix and Sons will shortly be reaching its 140th birthday but events such as this show we continue to evolve and move forward.”

Speaking at the event, former Northern Food chairman Lord Haskins said that while the world continued to suffer from the fall out of the economic turbulence, the fortunes for Hull and Humber were looking increasingly bright due to the renewables industry.

He said: “The time has come for the Humber’s economy to go from strength to strength. Businesses like Rix, which have been here for generations, are in the best possible place to benefit from that.”

FARMERS can save hundreds of pounds on their annual fuel bills thanks to a new product introduced by Rix Petroleum.

Super Heat 35 has been specially developed for the agricultural sector to power all burner applications above 88KW such as boilers, dryers and roadside roadstone coating plants.

Duncan Lambert, director at Rix Petroleum, said farmers can save around 3.9p per litre compared to the costs of standard fuel, which equates to a total annual saving of between eight to 10 per cent.

The product has been exclusively developed for Rix Petroleum and is not available from any other supplier.

Mr Lambert said: “Super Heat 35 gives you more power for your money, or more bang for your buck, as we like to say.

“It is much more efficient than using standard gas oil in grain dryers and can save arable farmers hundreds of pounds each year.

“The product has other benefits too, for example it is less abrasive than kerosene and has a longer shelf life than bio-fuel products.

“Although Rix can supply conventional gas oil, diesel and kerosene as well, Super Heat 35 is what we recommend for drying grains because you get premium performance but without the premium price.”

Super Heat 35 is available from the firm’s depots in Yorkshire and Humber, the Midlands and Mercia, which runs from Shropshire up to Manchester.

ATCHAM resident Mrs Richards is celebrating a great start to the summer thanks to Rix Petroleum (Mercia) Ltd and The Shropshire Star.

Mrs Richards, was the lucky winner of 500 litres of heating oil worth around £350 from the Market Drayton-based company in a competition run through the newspaper.

Rix tanker driver Roger Leath ensured the fuel was delivered straight to Julie’s door and Rory Beath, manager of Rix Petroleum’s Shropshire business, was on hand to congratulate the winner.

Rory said: “With last winter’s bad weather extending all the way into the new year we decided to bring some cheer to the season by giving people the opportunity to win 500 litres of heating oil, delivered free to their door. After all, it’s a good feeling to know you are fully prepared for all the British weather can throw at you.

“It was a great pleasure to inform Mrs Richards that she was the lucky and deserving winner, I hope it helps her and her family stay cosy until the warmer weather is upon us.”

Mrs Richards said she used heating oil because there was no mains gas supply to Atcham. She added she was delighted to have won.

She said: “I often enter these types of competitions but rarely win anything so was not expecting much to come of it. When I got the letter saying I had won it came as a huge surprise.

Can you believe that even though we're approaching the end of April many of us have still got our heating on at home? Although 2011's winter was one of the mildest on record it seems that the colder weather hasn't shown any signs of letting up. Heating oil demand is still pretty strong with customers wanting to ensure they have enough in their oil tanks in case the cold weather stays.

Have you checked your heating oil levels recently? It's a good idea to keep checking your heating oil levels especially when the Spring has been so cold.

The Downstream Incident Data Report, which reviewed carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning incidents in Great Britain between 1st July 2010 and 30th June 2011, is the first to include comparative data from oil and solid fuel installations, as well as gas and piped LPG.

During the period covered by the report, there were no reported fatalities caused by CO in homes using heating oil, and just three non-fatal incidents, the lowest of all the fuel types. Even allowing for the difference in the number of homes using the different fuels, oil came out on top as the safest choice for domestic use.

Jeremy Hawksley, Director General of OFTEC, said “Every carbon monoxide poisoning fatality is a tragedy, so it’s reassuring for oil customers to know that they’re using the safest fuel for their heating and cooking needs. Oil-fired systems are less likely to release dangerous carbon monoxide than natural gas, LPG or solid fuels, and regular servicing by an OFTEC registered technician will help minimise still further the remote risk of an incident occurring.” Read the full report by clicking here.

With the threat of a potential Unite Tanker driver strike, people are urged to ensure that if they choose to transport and store fuel at either a business or domestic premises they do so in accordance with the Law and as safely as possible.

Rix do not encourage people to store fuel at home unless:

A full risk assesment is undertaken

Any Fuel that is stored is done so in the correct container as outlined by Law ( The Petroleum Spirit Regulations 1929 & the Petroleum Spirit Plastic container regulations 1982)

Under no circumstances should the fuel be stored in the home itself

In the article below the Freight Transport Association (FTA) covers the key considerations in relation to the storage of fuel (petrol and diesel) at work or domestic premises. Health and safety regulations introduced in 2002 mean that the two types of premises / circumstances are dealt with differently.

Record Temperatures and Snow all within a week. Do you have enough Heating Oil?

Last week people were enjoying the sunshine in what has been confirmed as the third warmest March on record. The sunshine saw Scotland set a new record for the highest March temperature for not only one day but three days in a row!!

But hey, that was last week. This week has brought weather we were experiencing back in the middle of winter with Snow and Ice returning to Scotland. It has been reported that Aberdeenshire has seen as much as 6 inches of snow fall.

The cold weather looks set to stay for the short term, so make sure your heating oil tank is topped up just in case the temperatures stay so low. Can you believe that only a week ago Aboyne in Scotland reached 23.6c and on Tuesday this week the temperature isn't expected to get above -2c.

So don't delay, order your heating oil from Rix today.

Potential Unite Tanker Driver Strike Information

“Following the announcement that Unite is calling on tanker drivers serving oil majors and refinery operators to strike, Rix Petroleum is seeking to reassure customers we will do everything we can to minimise disruption to them, comments Rory Clarke, Managing Director of Rix Petroleum Ltd.

What is the dispute all about?

Unite says the strike ballot is about safety standards and terms and conditions. It says the industry is too "fragmented" and wants a "national forum" which would hold the employers to account over conditions.

They insist the dispute is not about pay.

Our priority is to help our customers through this difficult situation.

 Will there be a strike?

Whilst Unite has a mandate for strike action, on (Friday 30th March) it ruled out a strike over Easter by tanker drivers in a bid to focus on talks.

We understand that meetings between those concerned are scheduled for this week. We hope that a resolution can be found soon and that any further inconvenience to our customers can be avoided.

Should a strike be called, the union are required to give seven days notice.

What are we doing to address fuel shortages?

We are doing everything we can to address the situation by increasing the number of deliveries to our depots & petrol stations to help alleviate the higher demand for fuel.

But we need our customers’ help too in returning to a period of steady demand for fuel in order for us to re-stock the system.

We would ask them not to buy more fuel than normal and to look for any ways that they can conserve fuel.

We would also urge them not to use jerry cans as this heightens the safety risk, for example personal safety or leaks, and it causes congestion on petrol station forecourts.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide further updates as necessary.

According to the website safeworkers.co.uk the following is the legal process when unions are looking to strike:

By law, unions must give 7 days' notice of strike action to an employer stating that it intends to hold a ballot, the date on which the union reasonably believes the ballot will take place and any other information the union has which will help the employer make plans. The union must also give the employer a sample voting paper at least 3 days before the ballot. If the company has several sites, a separate ballot may need to be held at each workplace where strike action is proposed.

If workers vote in favour of strike action, it must begin within 4 weeks of the ballot taking place. This period may be extended up to 8 weeks after the ballot but only if the union and the employer both agree to it.

As you may know, there are some companies out there, offering their cheaper version of so called, ‘AdBlue’ – Urea Solution (‘Quality Urea Solution’ etc……), as it’s often called. This isn’t of course the real thing, not licensed and will almost certainly over time, cause expensive vehicle problems.

Here’s the ‘main bones’ from a recent independent laboratory sample on one such product being marketed to hauliers up in Scotland – ‘SCR Solution’ they call it………..

	In particular, the lab have highlighted;

Insolubles– not sure what they may be – but 50 % more than the standard states.

Calcium– tremendously high and you’ve seen what they say about water ‘hardness’ – see web link

Sodium– again this and the above – points to Tap water being used?

Not least the low content of Urea – at 29.6%! This may not even be automotive grade Urea being used?

In essence, it looks very likely - that it’s just a mixture of Tap Water and Urea......

Our advice is only buy offical AdBlue product. Ensure that it meets all the ISO standards and that the distributor is authorised.

As with all heating appliances, your heating oil boiler should be serviced on a regular basis to ensure that it is operating efficiently and safely. A qualified and experienced service engineer should carry out the service. There are a number of reasons and benefits why you should get your boiler serviced regularly, such as:

An efficient boiler burns less oil to produce the same amount of heat and it will also make it less likely that you will have to spend money at short notice to fix your boiler. OFTEC recommend that boilers are serviced on a yearly basis or as recommended by the manufacturer.

Without servicing your oil boiler on a regular basis, you are risking breakdown and considerable costs related to malfunction. A service is far cheaper than repairs so it’s a really good idea to ensure you make an oil boiler service a priority.

	Carbon monoxide can kill

Boilers that aren't properly installed, maintained or ventilated can give out carbon monoxide. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, drowsiness, nausea, breathlessness and stomach pains. Signs are sometimes difficult to identify and can be confused with tiredness or a cold. Unfortunately this silent killer can't be seen or smelt, so it really is important to make sure your boiler is serviced at least once a year to help reduce the chance of this happening. There are many carbon monoxide alarms available on the market which are a very good safety device to have fitted near to your boiler.

Rory Clarke sees opportunities for the renewables sector!

The expected boom in the renewables industry will offer “a huge opportunity for this part of the world” and JR Rix & Sons has its own part to play, said Rory Clarke, managing director of Rix Petroleum.

“I think it will completely transform Hull and Grimsby. It will create thousands of jobs, ultimately it will increase property values, increase incomes and I think it will be completely transformational"

Mr Clarke continued to say: “We think we have a number of skills and resources within our organisation that will be useful to businesses in the renewables sector. That includes land that we’ve got off dock, it includes opportunities for our marine refuelling business and lubricants, for the supply of fuel either land or marine, for the service and maintenance of the work boats that are doing maintenance of the pylons and we have commissioned a wind farm work boat ourselves."

A five-year long stint in the army saw Mr Clarke commissioned as an officer into the infantry spending several months stationed in Cyprus. However Yorkshire has been his home for 22 years, most of which he has spent working for JR Rix & Sons. In 1990 he started as a credit manager, later holding responsibilities for the development of biodiesel, and taking the role of managing director of Rix Petroleum seven or eight years ago. Five years ago he became a main board director.

Heating Oil thefts rise in Wales

Latest figures show a significant increase in heating oil thefts

Thefts of heating oil around Wales have increased by over 500% in the past five years, according to a recent article published by the BBC.

Figures show the equivalent of a theft of oil every day by the end of 2011.

The numbers jumped from 68 in 2007 to 364 last year, according to the statistics released under a Freedom of Information request.

So far this year thefts have been reported from the south of England up to Scotland, with one rural householder in Newlandrig, Midlothian, losing more than £1,700 worth of heating oil in a single raid.

Opportunist thieves who drive around the countryside looking for homes and businesses to target are also a threat as the temperatures remain low and the economic climate continues to squeeze people’s pockets.

Duncan Lambert, Director at Rix Petroleum, said there were precautions people could take to reduce the possibility of becoming victims of the oil theft.

He said: “Heating oil is a valuable commodity and all too often during the winter months it is targeted by thieves wanting it for their own use or selling it on the black market.

“The situation is not helped by the fact many homes and businesses targeted are in isolated areas where thieves can go unnoticed for long periods of time.

To help prevent Heating oil theft from your tank, here are some ideas of what you can do:

Make sure the oil gauge is secured correctly to the tank

If your tank has a lid design, consider fitting suitable locks and/or lockable valves where necessary and then ensure that they are used. This may be a legal requirement for some tanks. Your tank installation engineer or fuel delivery company will be able to advise you. Contact Rix Heating services for further advice: 01482 222250 or email us at maintenance@rix.co.uk

Monitor your oil tank on a regular basis. Remote electronic oil level gauges are available which will set off an audible alarm if the oil level in the tank suddenly drops or falls below a quarter full. These gauges can be located in the kitchen or perhaps a utility room to warn of any potential problem. Rix offer an automatic tank monitoring system, called Rix Oil Alert. Speak to us today on 01482 224422 or email us to find out more

If the need arises to replace your tank, consider where you position the tank and make more secure. But remember to leave clear access for the delivery man at the fill point and the gauge can be seen.

You MUST never lock or block the tank vent/ breather, as this will cause the tank to split and cause further damage.

Consider fitting CCTV to monitor the tank

Security lights can have a very positive effect and make any property a much harder target for the thief. It’s not always necessary to floodlight the area with high power beams, as a more subtle level of lighting may be all that is needed. Low energy “dusk till’ dawn lights positioned close to the tank should, in most cases, provide sufficient light to illuminate any suspicious activity. Big Freeze Continues!

Britain's big freeze shows little sign of relenting with sub-zero temperatures set to bring more misery to commuters up and down the country in the coming days.

Motorists taking to the roads have been warned to expect hazardous driving conditions again with ice and freezing fog forecast across parts of the UK.

Further flurries of snow could also fall in some parts of England with experts predicting a temperature low of -10C at night as the shivering spell of weather continues to sweep in from Siberia.

Victoria Kettley, forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather arm of the Press Association, said: "Tonight (7th Feb) is going to be mostly clear and dry but bitterly, bitterly cold. Across much of England and Wales we will see temperatures dropping to between -4C and -8C and in local spots it could get as low as -10C overnight."

Well the UK saw it's first significant snow fall this weekend as the tempreatures dropped and the winter landscape changed dramatically.

As we saw last year, demand for heating oil significantly increases when homes are using more due to the extreme weather. This increase in demand can significantly push the cost of heating oil up. If you're running low or have capacity to store more oil, it is advisable to stock up your oil tank sooner rather than later.

It's a shame we don't all have thick fur coats like one of our staff's pet rabbits shown here enjoying the snow this weekend.

	Brrrrr.....it's getting cold out there.

With tempreatures reaching -7c overnight and the cold weather set to continue, make sure your heating oil levels are stocked up to avoid running out. There is nothing worse than running out of heating oil for your home or business when the weather is at it's coldest. You'd be suprised how much more oil you use when the cold weather kicks in and you increase the tempreature level in your home to compensate.

Winter driving - Coping with cold, snow and ice

Winter is the season requiring most care and preparation if you're to stay safe on the roads.

Below are some tips for driving through the winter

	Battery and electrics

Check your battery - Batteries rarely last longer than five years. Replacing one near the end of its life can save a lot of time and inconvenience at the side of the road.

Avoid running electrical systems any longer than needed– turn the heater fan down and switch the heated rear window off once windows are clear, it can also help not to have the stereo when starting the car up on especially cold mornings.

If the car stands idle most of the weekend a regular overnight trickle charge is a good idea to give the battery a chance to revive.

	Be prepared

Stock up on Antifreeze – make sure your windows and windscreens are fully clear of snow and ice before you start your journey.

Check your Antifreeze levels - Antifreeze costs only a few pounds, but a frozen and cracked engine block will cost hundreds of pounds to repair.

Most modern cars use long-life antifreeze - it's important to use the right type and avoid mixing different types. Check the handbook or ask a dealer for advice.

Make sure that wipers are switched off when leaving your car after a journey, when there's risk of freezing. If you don't and the blades freeze to the screen, you could damage the blades or wiper motor when you turn the ignition on.

	Visibility

Check your bulbs - Make sure that all bulbs are working and that lenses are clean. When roads are really mucky you might need to clean lights after every journey. Keep the number plates clean too, as you can be fined if they are dirty and illegible.

If you have to clear snow from the car it's important to clear it from the lights - front and back - as well as from the glass and roof. Falling snow from a moving car can cause a serious hazard to other road users as well as yourself.

You must use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced. You may also use front or rear fog lights but these must be switched off when visibility improves as they can dazzle other road users and obscure your brake lights.

	Driving in snow and ice

	Be extra careful.

Gentle manoeuvres are the key to safe driving - stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow.

Wear comfortable, dry shoes for driving.

Pull away in second gear, easing your foot off the clutch gently to avoid wheel-spin.

Up hill - avoid having to stop part way up by waiting until it is clear of other cars or by leaving plenty of room to the car in front. Keep a constant speed, choosing the most suitable gear well in advance to avoid having to change down on the hill.

Down hill - reduce your speed before the hill, use a low gear and try to avoid using the brakes. Leave as much room as possible between you and the car in front.

Help Protect your Heating Oil tank from Thieves

With the cost of heating oil on the rise, the oil in your tank is even more attractive to thieves; you should consider taking appropriate security measures to prevent its theft, or unauthorised use.

This type of light can be both effective and inexpensive.

Please remember that the above points are just suggestions which may help to protect your tank from Oil Theft. We can not guarantee these suggestions will prevent a thief from stealing your oil.

Widespread wintry showers and hail are expected to hit parts of Britain on Friday 27th January, as the country braces itself for a spell of cooler weather that could bring snow to some regions.

While the past few weeks have been unseasonably mild across the country, temperatures are set to drop by this weekend, reaching as low as -5C (23F) overnight, this is very likely to push the demand for heating oil up.

Experts say there is also the potential for snow as a warm Atlantic weather system from the west clashes with cold air in the east. ( Source: Met office)

Husband and wife Martin and Sheena Rhodes have been feeling as warm as toast in the freezing temperatures thanks to our winter heating oil competition our Midlands depot ran in the Leamington Courier.

The pair, of Halford Road, Ettington, were the winners of 500 litres of heating oil, worth around £350, from Coleshill-based Rix Petroleum (Midlands).

Mr Rhodes, aged 58, said: “Sheena entered the competition – she does quite a few – but this is the first one we’ve won.

“We were gearing up for a cold winter like last year so it was quite a relief to find out we had won. The fuel has certainly made a big difference to our winter heating bill. We were delighted when we found out the news.”

Paul Doherty, general manager of Rix Petroleum’s Midlands business, was on hand to congratulate the winners when tanker driver Paul Pemberton delivered it in time for Christmas.

Mr Doherty said: “With last year’s weather being so cold, we decided to bring some seasonal cheer by giving people the opportunity to win 500 litres of fuel, delivered free to their door.

“It’s a good feeling to know you are prepared for all the British weather can throw at you.”

LEADING Hull fuel company Rix Petroleum has ranked 59th in this year’s Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 250 – four places higher than when it last featured in 2009.

The fifth-generation family business, based on Spyvee Street, east Hull, turned over in the last financial year, making it the highest ranking East Yorkshire firm to make the list. Managing Director, Rory Clarke, said he was delighted with the news, which saw the company move up from 63rd place in 2009.

“Rix Petroleum has been trading steadily throughout the year and we have opened a number of new depots across the country to extend our geographical reach,” he said. “Despite challenging economic conditions, we are pleased with the performance of the business and expect this to continue into 2012.”

Rix Petroleum is the largest of the J.R. Rix & Sons Ltd group of companies, which range from ship building and shipping to caravan manufacturing, fuel and car sales. The company retails petroleum products through Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, the Midlands, the east coast of Scotland and East Anglia.

The Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 250 ranks Britain’s top 250 mid-market privately owned companies in order of sales revenue. Owners and directors learned of their position in the league table at an awards dinner held at London’s Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel on October 13th. Speakers on the night included Rupert Soames, Group Chief Executive Officer of Glasgow-based power equipment company Aggreko PLC, and a Q&A with Johnnie Boden, founder and Chairman of fashion retailer Boden.

Despite difficult trading conditions 215 out of the 250 companies in the league table increased their sales, and 170 improved their operating margins over the last financial year, according to Top Track. Companies included in the list generated profits of £4.8bn from sales of £71.2bn over that period – the equivalent to 5% of GDP.

Rix Petroleum help Driffield Theatre Company raise all important funds.

Leading East Yorkshire fuel company Rix Petroleum has donated a HTC Smart phone to a Driffield theatre company, to help it raise vital cash for new sound equipment. The phone, worth more than £400, is to be the star prize at a raffle and funding raising event in aid of the Star Struck Theatre Company due to be held in October. Tickets to win the phone went on sale at the theatre company’s production of the classic Broadway musical Annie, which it staged on August 28th and 29th at its Nafferton base.

The money collected by the raffle will go towards new microphones for the school, which relies on donations and fund raising events to provide costumes, lighting and sound equipment for its students. Jez Francis, founder and musical director of Star Struck Theatre Company, said the donation would go along way to helping fund the new equipment.

“We are very grateful to Rix,” he said.

“It’s great to see a large local company supporting a small organisation like ours and supporting the arts. Our aim with the school is to give local kids the opportunity to do something they wouldn’t otherwise get and ensure it is affordable for everyone.

We charge a small term-time rate which covers the rent and heating of the building, but all the extra stuff we need to put on productions comes via our fund raising efforts, which is why donations such as this are so important to us.”

Jez, who worked in the West End and on cruise ships for a decade, started the school in 2007 with just 10 students. It now has up to 40 youngsters attending from as far a field as Market Weighton, Beverley and Bridlington and often invite professional coaches from London to tutor the kids in dancing, singing and acting.

Duncan Lambert, Rix Petroleum director and general manager, said he was delighted to give the Star Struck Theatre Company the phone “Jez and his team do a great job running the school. It is real grass roots stuff that helps give kids something positive to focus on outside school. I hope they are able to raise all the money they need and I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before the theatre school produces its first star.”

Rix Petroleum invest to ensure our customers aren't left out in the cold!

Leading fuel company Rix Petroleum Ltd is gearing up to ensure customers won’t be left out in the cold this winter time. After the treacherous weather conditions of last year, the company has invested thousands of pounds to equip its fleet of tankers with winter tyres designed to offer maximum grip and safety in freezing temperatures. The tyres are made from a compound which has been specifically engineered to work at temperatures below seven degrees centigrade and have a special tread pattern to perform well in icy conditions. The move comes after forecasters predicted another harsh winter for the UK, as Rix wanted to ensure it was fully prepared to service all its customers over the winter period.

Rory Clarke, Managing Director of the company, said although standard tyres have basic winter capabilities, they were not as effective as the new ones.

He added that as well as the tyres, Rix had invested in new steel wheel rims so they could quickly swap over to the bad weather kit as and when it was required.

Rory said: “We are keen to ensure that we are fully prepared for the winter, no matter what it has to throw at us. We generally adhere to the ‘hope for the best but prepare for the worst’ philosophy in an effort to do our bit for our customers. Last year took everyone by surprise – the weather was unprecedented. We expect a bit of snow every year but we didn’t expect it to go on for weeks. Although during that time we didn’t miss an order, we feel this is an excellent move to help our customers and our drivers get through what could be another challenging winter.”

He added many European countries such as Austria and Germany already enforced the use of winter tyres on HGVs and the Scottish Government was currently considering the matter, but no such regulations existed in England and Wales.

“Although there is no legal requirement to fit the tyres,” he said, “we always like to make sure we are ahead of the game.”

Rory said that as well as the efforts of Rix, home owners who rely on heating oil for power can help themselves by ensuring they order early to avoid panic buying should the weather turn bad.

He said residents should also allow a couple of extra days for delivery in poor weather conditions as high demand, combined with slow moving traffic, makes getting out to more isolated parts of the country a challenge. By ordering early and keeping a close eye on how much oil they have left, people can really help themselves to ensure they don’t run low when they need it most. This is particularly important for more vulnerable groups such as the elderly, for whom being without power and heat is a very serious problem.”

Spalding fuel company invests in new tanker as demand grows across the region.

Leading fuel company Rix Petroleum Ltd has expanded its Spalding-based tanker fleet to meeting a growing demand for fuel across the region. The company, based at Welland Business Park in Clay Lake, has invested a six-figure sum in the new truck which will be used to deliver heating oil and commercial diesel to home owners and farmers in South Lincolnshire, North Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. It is the second new tanker Rix has invested in since setting up its Spalding depot just six months ago and brings the total fleet to three.

The company has also taken on a new driver, who was made redundant when another local transport depot closed down earlier this year. Robin Exley, manager of the depot, said Rix had purchased the new truck in anticipation of the cold winter weather, which always drives demand.

“We were very busy throughout the harvest,” he said.

“We managed to deliver all our orders but realised with winter on the way we would need more capacity. That’s why we have decided to invest in the truck, because demand is showing no sign of slowing down and winter is traditionally the time when we are busiest. We want to ensure we have the capacity to deliver every litre ordered as quickly as we possibly can.”

The new truck is a six-wheel Scania with a laden weight of 26 tonnes and a capacity of 20,000 litres. The move comes after the company invested thousands of pounds in snow tyres and chains ahead of the winter months to ensure it can battle the worst of the weather. Mr Exley added he was pleased to be able to offer employment to someone who had lost his job during the recession.

He said: “A Peterborough-based depot closed down earlier this year, making a number of drivers redundant, which is a great shame for them and their families. We have been able to give two of them jobs which is very satisfying, and if the business keeps growing as it has done over the last few months, who knows what we might be able to do in the future.”

Rix’s Spalding depot opened up in May and serves communities within a 30 miles radius of the town. It is part of Rix Petroleum – a fifth generation family company that is headquartered in Hull.

The Bishop of Norwich has called for kind-hearted Norfolk folk to spread a little warmth to others at the launch of the Surviving Winter Appeal in Norfolk.

The Right Reverend Graham James, Bishop of Norwich, is lending his support to the appeal, which aims to help vulnerable older people stay warm and healthy over winter. He said: “This is as strong a call to action and an appeal to human instinct to help each other as it gets - if the many help the few through this fund we could potentially save several lives in Norfolk which could be at risk otherwise, and reduce a lot of suffering.”

Through the scheme, which is also supported by the EDP, anyone can donate to the Surviving Winter Fund set up by the Norfolk Community Foundation to help the elderly keep warm in the colder months. The fund also provides those receiving Winter Fuel Allowance payments who don’t feel they need it with a way of donating those funds to pensioners in greater need. The Foundation is working with Age UK Norfolk to help identify those in greatest need of help through the scheme.

Foundation Director Graham Tuttle said; “The need is greater than ever in Norfolk. If just 1% of people in Norfolk who are eligible to receive this benefit and Gift Aid it, the Foundation could raise more than £300,000 to provide assistance with fuel costs, hot food and warm clothing for those facing hardship this winter. We urge those who can help to get in touch with us as soon as they can direct or using the form here on this page so we can have those resources at the ready when needed. They could make a huge difference to others in difficulty.”

The launch comes as Age UK Norfolk has revealed shocking statistics showing exactly how great that need is in the county, and how the fund could actually help keep some Norfolk pensioners alive.

Over 1 in 3 pensioners in the UK live in Fuel Poverty, and several areas of Norfolk have a higher percentage of excess winter deaths than the UK average as a result of fuel poverty. With these low-income pensioner households at greatest risk of excess winter deaths, Age UK says that the accessibility of fuel in a cold snap can become a real issue in many of these households. A donation towards the average energy bill of £100 would cut fuel poverty by 45% and £300 would cut it by 75%.

Speaking on behalf of Age UK Norfolk, development manager Linda Gill said; “We have volunteers working closely with vulnerable elderly people so we know this is an issue, and can identify those in real need of a bit of timely help to keep them out of danger.”

A review of figures in 2009 also showed a 49% increase in excess UK winter deaths on the previous year. The number of Norfolk residents aged 60 and over is also expected to increase over the next 20 years from over a quarter of the county’s population to over a third.

To kick-start this year’s appeal Rix Petroleum has stepped in to help by donating six emergency ‘run out’ fuel packs to elderly and vulnerable pensioners with no prospect of an oil delivery in cold weather due to fuel poverty.

Director Rory Beath said: “We wanted to do something really useful and practical to help. These packs will be accessible to those in real short-term difficulty referred to us locally through Age UK and we are always keen to try and find solutions to help others too.”

Warwickshire fuel company invests in new tankers as business grows.

Leading fuel company Rix Petroleum (Midlands) Ltd has expanded its Coleshill tanker fleet to meet growing demand for heating oil & fuel across Warwickshire and the West Midlands.

The company, based on Station Road in the town, has invested a six-figure sum to buy two new tankers which will deliver heating oil, gas oil and commercial diesel to home owners, farmers, commercial businesses and transport companies across the region.

The move comes just weeks after Rix Petroleum spent thousands of pounds gearing up its fleet for winter by investing in snow tyres and chains along with new steel rims should the weather turn bad.

It brings the total number of tankers employed at the depot to eight, up from just two when the Midlands operation was set up less than three years ago.

Paul Doherty, General Manager of the Coleshill depot, said Rix purchased the new tankers due to an increase in business across all markets

Along with the new trucks the company employed two new drivers in the last month to ensure it is fully staffed for the winter months.

Mr Doherty said: “Demand has been rapidly increasing since we set up in March 2009 and as a result we have grown the business at an overwhelming rate since then.

“We are always busy around harvest time as demand from the agricultural sector is very high and then of course, coming into the winter months we are extremely busy with homeowner’s and businesses ordering heating oil.

“We have also seen huge growth in the haulage sector with fuel requirements for coach and fleet operators, so investing in the new tankers really is a necessity for us. They will ensure we can continue meeting the rising demand for fuel across the region.”

The new trucks are six and eight-wheel Scanias with a capacity of up to 25,000 litres and a laden weight of 32 tonnes.

The Coleshill depot has taken delivery of one of the tankers, which is now in service, and is awaiting delivery of the second.

Mr Doherty added the snow tyres and chains were a precaution against the weather, which last year saw record levels of snow fall across the UK.

“The tyres and chains can be made available for all eight tankers,” he said.

“It is our way of being prepared. So far the weather hasn’t been anything like last winter but we need to be equipped for all eventualities

“We want to be in the position to meet our excellent service levels, regardless of demand or weather conditions; the extra capacity the new tankers give us, along with the tyres and chains, will allow us to do just that.”
